Why Covid-19 has made us “outdoorsy”

Even though Covid-19 has morphed many people into couch potatoes, there are still many outdoors activities that are low risk.‍

The Mayo Clinic has published a lengthy article regarding outdoor activities that pose a low risk of being infected with Covid-19. With an abundance of space outdoors, it is easier to maintain requirements of social distancing.

Many Schools responded rapidly and moved much of their activities outdoors when the pandemic hit. In Norway there is a saying, “there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. Even during winter time, there are loads of things to do outside even if it is cold or rainy.

Harsher environment

We humans are able to cope with harsh seasonal variations. The Covid-19 virus does not thrive in hot temperatures. Although cold temperatures can preserve the virus, rain and snow can reduce risk. That being said, there is no evidence that materials and surfaces are major sources of virus distribution.

In other words – the outdoors is a low risk environment.

Especially during the wintertime, people tend to spend more time indoors in groups – and this is a problem. There are regular infections, such as colds, that might accelerate the spread of disease.

Wittario games

Wittario facilitates fun outdoor activities during all seasons.

– We have one day a week where we focus on outdoor learning. This is appreciated by the students, says teacher Bjørn Christensen at Krapfoss School.

Wittario is frequently used during the outdoor days, and also during regular school days.

– Especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, we strive to be as much outdoors as possible. An added benefit of using Wittario is that the students are dispersed over a set area; “Auto social distancing”. At the same time, students learn and collaborate, they are physically active and they have fun, says Christensen.
